To no one’s surprise, the Chester/J-I Hawks captured the District 10C girls basketball championship Saturday night in Cut Bank.

But the Hawks had to fight every step of the way to get a second title in the last two years.

C/J-I faced off against rival Valier Saturday night in the 10C championship game, and though it was a struggle at times, the Hawks prevailed 50-41 and will now move on to the Northern C Divisonal later this week in Great Falls.

No stats were reported from the championship game, a game C/J-I reached by crushing Dutton-Brady in the semifinals on Friday. The Hawks took care of the Diamondbacks 64-31 behind 16 points from Mikole Wolfe and another 14 from Stina Haaland.

As the 10C champion, the Hawks will open play at the Northern C at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday night against the runner-up from District 7C.

C/J-I is the only area girls team still standing from the 10C, 1B and 2B.

Last week in Conrad, the Rocky Boy Morning Stars were beat twice at the District 1B tournament, ending their season. Rocky Boy lost to Conrad 58-36 in the opening round on Thursday, then fell to Cut Bank 79-55 in a loser-out game on Saturday morning.

Harlem was also eliminated from the 2B tourney in Wolf Point. The Wildcats lost their opener to the host Wolves 53-29.

On Monday night in Cut Bank, Valier beat Dutton-Brady in a 10C challenge game. The Panthers will be the seocnd team from the 10C at this week's Northern C.

The 2012 Northern C girls tourney begins Thursday afternoon at the Four Seasons Arena in Great Falls.
