Havre City Council member and Safety Committee Chair Janet Trethewey told the council about the committee’s recent meeting on Tuesday night, including the one major finding, that the police and fire departments, occasionally, become filled with diesel exhaust.
She told her fellow council members that a problem with the ventilation in the building causes the exhaust given off by the fire engines running in the garage to be trapped in and spread throughout the rest of the attached building.
Fire Chief Dave Sheppard said the problem is the ventilation doesn’t carry exhaust outside well enough, particularly with one engine.
“It’s our oldest engine, so it does put out more exhaust, ” Sheppard said. “We just sort of deal with it, open doors and try to vent it out. ”
He said the engine is started at least weekly, during regular equipment tests.
After Trethewey informed the council of the issue, Mayor Tim Solomon said he and the Public Works Department would look at having the problem fixed soon.
