Reader says Havre Daily was unfair on story on Dem leaflet

Just a quick question from a loyal reader:

Tell me, will the Montana Democratic Party be billed by the Havre Daily News for the lengthy, super-caustic political "ad" printed on the front page of Friday's paper?

This read as a blatant, unfair attack on Rep. Kris Hansen and her integrity.

And it brings up a question of the paper's claim of fair and unbiased reporting. One hopes Rep. Hansen will have an equal opportunity to share her stand on the issues ... on your front page and in bold headlines.

Editor's note: The story was an account of a political leaflet distributed by the Montana Democratic Party against Kris Hansen. Reporter Tim Leeds called and emailed Hansen 23 hours before the deadline on the story to get her side of the story. No comment yet. Kris Hansen has written numerous guest columns on our editorial page over the last two years describing her thoughts on state issues. She is welcome to do so again. If you feel the leaflet was unfair to Hansen, your argument is with the Montana Democratic Party, not the Havre Daily News.

Hansen did not vote against education, children’s health care, home heating assistance or anything else listed on that inaccurate flyer. What she voted against that was cited as fact on the drop piece was horrendous budget increases for those things.

ABSOLUTLY NOTHING GOT CUT! In fact spending increased in every give away assistance program in operation last session because of the control of the democrat governor and his following. What they didn’t get because of Hansen and others was a huge windfall increase. Instead they received a modest cost of living increase. Hansen saved all taxpayers money. The only ones complaining are those that leech off of these programs

Do your home work before you vote. Don’t just take what distorted things you read in the HDN or political pieces as gospel fact or you will be mislead.

Gail and Jim talk about how the leaflet was "unfair" and "misleading." But they don't say how. The leaflet contained all of the relevant votes to back up it's claims. Can you two back up yours?

I say, check the votes there's no disputing that Hansen did wrong by Havre during the last legislative session, and needs to be replaced.

I also can agree with John that the Democrat Party is the one to take to task for the leaflet drop and the misleading (or downright lies) contained in the piece. But John is dead wrong about the Havre Daily’s responsibility with the front page story attempting to make this inaccurate trash into a newsworthy story. They are solely responsible for what is printed in this newspaper so my argument is with you John and your star reporter Tim Leeds. Anyone in Havre that buys advertising space in your tabloid is further contributing to your follies published in the Havre Enquirer

So much for journalistic ethics
