The Havre High track and field program has filled its schedule with tough meets this season, and still in the shadows of the weekend’s Belgrade Invite, the Blue Ponies are back on the road.
Tuesday the Central A Blue Ponies will be in Malta for the Malta Invite. The Ponies will be the only Class A program in attendance, but will be met once again by a lot of top Hi-Line talent, including North Star, Chinook and Big Sandy. Teams like Saco-W
hitewater will also make the trip.
But the Ponies aren’t going into Malta with the same mentality as they have on other occasions this season. Malta has a dirt track and the athletes do their jumps from the grass. It is a good meet to see good competition, but the Ponies are instead using the meet to have fun, relax and try a couple new events.
“Some of our kids aren’t going to compete in their normal events.” Havre High head coach Trevor VanCampen said. We aren’t pushing the kids because we don’t want to risk injury or some sort of freak accident. But we are using this meet to just enter in some different events and see what else track has to offer besides the same events they have been doing since they were a freshman.”
Sammy Evans and Mason Case are perfect examples. They will make the trip, but Evans wont jump, and Case won’t run the 100 or 200. But they will still look to perform well in whatever event they choose, as they have both led the Ponies all season long.
“This meet will be fun,” Vancampen said. “We aren’t pushing for points, we just want the kids to relax and enjoy a break. We are in mid season and this should be a relaxing meet for the kids before we press forward for whitefish on Saturday.”
