Over the weekend, the Lions dominated the Major League baseball tournament, and nothing says domination like a league title.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the Major League baseball tournament was settled at the Lions Park in Havre. Master Sports, Subway, Bing and B
obs and Lions all competed for the title, but it was the Lions squad that was crowned the 2012 Havre Youth Baseball Major League champions, as they defeated Subway 15-3 in the chipper.
The Lions rolled through the competition over the weekend, finishing the tournament with a perfect 3-0 record. On their way to the championship, Lions defeated Master Sports 15-1 and Bing and Bobs 19-3 in a total of just 10 innings. They also racked up 19 hits in their game against Bing Bobs on Saturday, before having another successful outing against Subway.
Subway had a little longer road to the chipper.
In the first round, Bing and Bobs defeated Subway 10-9, but Subway bounced back to defeat Master Sports 12-11 in loser out action. Subway then defeated Bing and Bobs 17-15 in a rematch, but unfortunately couldn’t find a way to take down Lions in the championship game.
Once in the championship game, the Lions continued to roll, while Subway never got the bats going, and struggled with defensive errors.
Lions took a 3-0 lead after the first inning, and never let up. They added five runs the second, four in the third and three in the bottom of the fifth. Subway’s offense tried to keep pace, but scored just one run in the second, one in the third and one in the sixth. The Lions took advantage of 10 hits, but also took advantage of five Subway errors. Subway had just five hits.
Trey Murphy was the starting pitcher for Lions, and pitched four standout innings, including the first inning where he struck out three of four batters faced. Murphy had six total strikeouts, while giving up two runs and only four hits.
Brenden Danielson helped lead the Lions’ offense by going 3-of-3 with four RBIs. And Iver Aageson pitche din with two hits, including a triple, and one RBI. Hunter Lovenguth also had a hit and three RBIs, while Robert Caplette also had a double.
Kennedy McKay had a double and an RBI for Subway, while Jacoby Fox also had a hit and an RBI. Nick Tanner also added an RBI single to the mix.
