The B League softball tournament had a lot of talented players and squads this year, but the North Western Energy squad proved to be just a little bit tougher than the rest of the field last week.
Thursday the B League softball tournament championship was played at the Sixth Avenue Memorial Field in Havre. And while Chinook came on strong lat
e in the tournament to make the title game, they couldn’t quite matchup with the North Western Energy (NWE) team that took it all this year. NWE defeated Chinook 9-1 to claim the No. 1 spot this season.
And it didn’t take long at all, for NWE to take control of the ballgame.
In the bottom of the first inning NWE found themselves leading 5-0 on four hits and two Chinook errors. Jaycee Schlotfeldt, Ryen Olson and Jaycelyn Hassa all had an RBI single in the inning, while Mystic Farinas scored on an error, and Hassa also scored on a wild pitch.
The big first inning gave NWE the lead and control of the game, but they also added two runs in the second inning and two runs in the third. They put together one hit and three walks to score in the second, and three more hits to get on the board again in the third.
Chinook did manage to shut out NWE in the fourth, but couldn’t get their offense to keep pace. The Chinook batters totaled just four hits, but did manage to score a run in the top of the fifth. Hailey McMaster grabbed a single in that fifth inning, while Rachel Gunderson was able to score on an error throw by NWE.
NWE was led by Olson who went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, as well as Jessica Azure, McDonald, Janaae Boles, Neveah Pourier and Hassa, who also had one hit each.
Chinook got one hit each by Carrie Hofer and McMaster, but was passed by Gunderson, who was 2-for-2 with two singles.
