It was scorching hot, it was sunny and it was dusty. But the 2012 Havre Junior Rodeo was a big success and successfully kicked off the night entertainment at the 2012 Great Northern Fair.

Wednesday night’s junior rodeo was held in near 100 degree temperatures, but nearly 150 cowboys and cowgirls, ranging from the age of four to the age of 18 turned out to compete in what is always a great tradition at the fair

Frankie Lasalle hangs on to her sheep as it zooms out of the chute in the 4- to 6-year-old sheep riding event during the Hi-Line Junior Rodeo Wednesday evening at the Great Northern Fair. Nearly 150 cowboys and cowgirls ranging from the age of four to the age of 18 competed in Wednesday night's rodeo, which annually kicks off the night entertainment at the fair.

. There were competitors from as close as Havre, as well as Rocky Boy, Harlem, Big Sandy, Box Elder and Rudyard, and as far away as Great Falls entered in the event. The rodeo is so popular in fact, that there was over 50 competitors alone in sheep riding and another 50 in barrel racing.

And while the juniors took center stage on Wednesday night, it will be the professionals turn tonight and Friday as the annual NRA Great Northern Stampede is held inside the Great Northern Fairgrounds Arena.

However, Wednesday night was, and will always be about the youth movement in rodeo, and it was a great night for everyone who participated.
