Much to my dismay, I recently learned that Nikki Carlson is leaving the Havre Daily News for yet another horizon. I wish her well and must say she will be missed! Fortunately, Havre is not losing her, but the Havre Daily News is left with the daunting task of filling her shoes, or I should say, camera bag and vest.
I don't believe I am alone in looking forward to the Havre Daily News just to see another award-winning shot by Nikki. Often wondering, how does she do that?
She has an endearing and never-ending talent for showing us light, symmetry, color, balance and all the necessities of photography. Mostly though, she has shown us a want of life and emotion through her vision — sometimes entertaining, sometimes heartrending. An endowment few photographers have.
My possessing as much or as little talent about the processes of photography as a semi-decent amateur, she has shown these old bones that, indeed, one is never too old to learn or to be inspired. Perhaps I should have told her that more often.
I trust she is not done shooting; I hope she never puts the camera down. She will leave a haze and a void in capturing the daily life in Havre, for Nikki truly is a "Light Writer."
