Things are slowly winding down on the 2012 summer, and that means golf leagues are almost over.

One such league ended on last Wednesday night as the Prairie Farms men’s league concluded its playoffs with an 18-hole championship match between Michelob Light and Havre Ford. The match ended with Havre Ford coming out on top in what was an excellent night of golf all the way around.

t to extend a hearty congratulations to my teammates, Brett Gilman, Steve Steinmetz and Dave Boles. I’d also like to thank Steve, Charlie and Pete Steinmetz for sponsoring the golf team I’ve played on for over 10 years now. Overall, this was Havre Ford’s second men’s league championship. Also playing on Havre Ford this year was Jeremy Heninger and J.T. Schubert and Pete Steinmetz.

Members of the outstanding Michelob Light team, which played on Wednesday night, included Jim Kato, Tom Adams, Bruce Normandy and Tom Baker III. Also competing for Michelob Light this season was Murray Barkus and Jim Heberly.

As for the match itself, Havre Ford won three of the four individual matches, while there was also some outstanding scores shot on Wednesday. Jim Kato continued his red-hot play by firing a 6-under par 66. He also shot a 32 on the front nine in Tuesday’s semifinals. Gilman fired an even-par 72 and Boles shot an outstanding 74.

Last Tuesday night, in the semifinals, Havre Ford beat Wagner Plumbing in one semifinal match, while Michelob Light took down Valley Furniture in the other. Congrats to all four semifinal teams, and a special congrats needs to be given to Valley Furniture for an outstanding overall season. They won both halves of the regular season, and only lost two matches all year — both to Michelob Light.

Meanwhile, golf leagues will continue to wrap up this week around the Hi-Line. The championship match in ladies league at Prairie Farms is set for this week, as is the championship in Thursday night men’s league at Beaver Creek Golf Course.

In ladies league action last Thursday night Havre Heating & AC defeated Stockman Bank 19-17 and D.A. Davidson defeated Patrick Construction 19-17. Low gross was Stacey Sheppard with a 42 and low net was Katie Heath with a 42.

The Chinook Golf Club’s men’s league finals are also drawing to close. We will publish one more golf column next Wednesday, so hopefully we’ll have all of those results then.

There is one more tournament on the Prairie Farms calendar, the annual Birdy-Birdie event, which will be held Sept. 15-16.

High school golf is in full swing and the Havre High golf teams will hold the annual Havre Invitational on Sept. 8 at Beaver Creek Golf Course.
