The high school volleyball season is in full swing and this coming weekend will mark the start of conference play for many local teams.

Last weekend, there were two big tournaments in the Hi-Line, with the North Star Showcase in Rudyard and Gildford and the Chinook Invitational in Chinook.

On Friday at the North Star tourney, the Big Sandy Pioneers went a solid 3-1 in the Rudyard Pool, while North Stars went 3-1 in the Gildford Pool while the Rocky Boy Morning Stars went 2-2 in the same pool.

Saturday’s action turned to the championship bracket where Big Sandy beat the Morning Stars and North Star took down Dutton-Brady in the first round. The Pioneers and Knights were both beaten in the semifinals, then squared off in the third-place match. In that match North Star beat Big Sandy by scores of 26-24 and 25-16. Rocky Boy lost in the fifth-place match, while Roy-Winifred beat Sunburst in the championship.

In Chinook last Friday, the host Sugarbeeters went a perfect 4-0 in pool play, while the Chester/J-I Hawks didn’t fare as well, going 0-4. The Chinook Invitational features top Class B teams such as Conrad, Cut Bank, Malta and Glasgow. Class C powers Simms, Highwood and Valier were also in attendance.

In Saturday’s bracket play, Chinook beat Valier in the quarterfinals, then lost to Cut bank in the semifinals.  The Beeters also lost to Shelby to finish fifth in their own tourney. C/J-I lost to Shelby, then beat Valier before losing out to Simms.

Shelby beat Conrad in the consolation match, while Cut Bank beat Glasgow for the championship match.
