The Havre High cross country team had a great season opener a week ago, and facing another tough field of harriers, the Blue Ponies are looking for another top performance.
Today the Central A Ponies will be running in Malta, an annual stop on their season schedule. The Ponies were scheduled to run on Saturday, but the meet was moved to this afternoon earlier this week.
HHS will be the only Class A program in attendance, but the rest of the field will be competitive to say the least. Malta, Glasgow, Harlem, Dodson, Wolf Point, Poplar and Culbertson headline the Class B and Class C squads in attendance. Culbertson has one of the top boys teams in the Class C and state, while the Glasgow girls dominate the Class B ranks, and most Class A squads.
Last year the Pony girls edged out Glasgow for the No. 1 spot by just one point.
After the Ponies turned in a great weekend in week one, Malta should prove to be another good measuring stick for Havre.
“There are always good teams and runners there,” Havre High head coach Kyle Fisher said. “Culbertson is always a very good boys team, as is Dodson. And the Glasgow girls and boys are very good; they are always at the top of ranks in Class B. There is going to be some really good competition for us this weekend.
“And I hope we can (continue to run as well as last weekend).” Fisher added. “Each weekend is a building weekend for the kids, and they just have to keep improving. Both the boys and girls need to improve week to week, and as we do that, the confidence will really start to build.”
For the boys squad, newcomer Elijah David was the team’s No. 3 runner, turning in a time of 19:29.70, a very impressive mark for his first high school race. Marc Klimas continued to lead the team, but fisher is also leaning on Desmond Fialkosky, another veteran. On the girls’ side, they are loaded with talent, with Jess Wiken leading the way. Katie Christianson and Trisha Kinsella also turned in great times last week in Cut Bank.
