First, the Montana State University-Northern football team got its first win of the season. And now, the Light shave their first Player of the Week Award.
MSU-N junior quarterback Derek Lear was named both the Frontier Conference Player of the Week and the NAIA Offensive Player of the week after shattering several Northern single-game passing records in the Lights’ 46-39 win over UM-Western last Saturday in Havre.
Lear, a native of Fairfield was 32-of-45 passing for 532 yards, seven touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed for 74 yards on 11 carries. He set school records for touchdown passes in a game, passing yards in game and total yards in game. The original DakStats had Lear at 485 passing yards following Saturday’s game, but upon further review of the stats, he had an even bigger day as he connected with eight different receivers.
Montana Tech’s Touzinsky was named the Frontier Defensive Player of the Week. He totaled 12 solo tackles, one assisted tackle, four tackles for losses of 16 yards, two quarterback sacks, one fumble recovery and one pass break up in Tech’s win over Rocky Mountain College. Carroll kicker/punter Tom Yaremko earned the Special Teams Player of the Week.
There were several changes for Frontier teams in this week’s NAIA Coaches Poll, which was released Monday afternoon. After beating Eastern Oregon Saturday, Carroll moved up to No. 8 in this week’s poll, while the Mounties fell to No. 14 with their first loss of the season. Tech moved up one spot to No. 16, while RMC dropped out of the Top 25, but still received seven votes.
