Bernard Gayton Armstrong

Bernard Gayton Armstrong was born to Fredrick Gayton and Dorothy Baumgartel Armstrong in Havre, Mont.

He attended Havre Schools and enlisted in the U. S. Navy in 1954, graduating from high school and corpsman training in 1955 at Great Lakes, Ill. He was transferred to the U. S. Marine Corps and was stationed in Okinawa. Bernard was honorably discharged in 1958 and returned to Havre where he was employed by the Great Northern Railroad. He attended Northern Montana College and the University of Montana, Missoula, and subsequently graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Metropolitan University at St. Paul, Minn.

On Sept. 22, 1962, he married Patricia “Patti” Cobb in Havre.

They are the parents of Karl and Brian Armstrong.

Bernard is survived by his spouse, Patti; sons Karl and Brian (Sara) ; two grandchildren, Quinn and Claire Armstrong of Illinois; and a brother, Tom (Sharon Jasmine) Armstrong of Oregon. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Gayton and Bernice Sharples Armstrong; mother, Dorothy; father, Fredrick; and a brother, Stephen.

Mr. Armstrong

was employed by BNSF for 39 years, retiring in 1991. He became active with the Johnson County Friends of the Library, the Water Garden Society, the Extension Master Gardeners of Johnson and Miami Counties.

As a young man in Montana, he loved fishing and hunting. His greatest joy was feeding his Japanese Koi at sunset. He loved reading and researching and sharing information.
