It all comes down to two day of golf as the Chinook golf team heads off to the 1999 State Golf Tournament. The tournament will be held in Saint Regis at the Tressel Creek Golf Course and in Frenchtown at the King Ranch Golf Course. The tournament starts on May 17 and runs until May 19.
Each team at state will consist of five players and the Sugarbetters five are juniors Lucas Paugh and Tyler Oehmcke, sophomores Kent Hansen and T.J. Murry, and freshman Kyle Doney.
Jessica Kaufaman who is a freshman will be the lone girl to attend state for Chinook this year.
Oehmcke is the only player on the Chinook team with experince at the state tournament after competing last year. The Beeters still all have quite a few varsity tournament under thier belts. After being paired with other athletes from all around the state during the year Chinook is in a no pressure situation and will take this tournament just like any other one said coach Mike Seymour.
Seymour said they wil not be looking for a team title but he does expect Oehmcke and Paugh to break into the top 15 or even the top 10. If they are able to do that and the rest of the team has some good scores Seymour said they should be able to place in the top 20 in team sccores.
With the weather not cooperating the Beeters have not had as much practice play as they had wanted. Seymour said though with the weather not looking any better it was good for them to play with the layers on and cold hands this week to get prepared.
The Beeters will play practice rounds at both course on Monday and the golfers are allowed to take notes on each hole.
This is the fourth year of golf in Chinook with the best year coming last year as Richie Baxter was in the top ten and Scott Nicolson placed in the top 20. Seymour said even though they have lofty goals the team should be able to obtain them.
Hopefully the kids will rise to the occasion, Seymour said.
With no seniors and only one golfer with experince the Beeters are looking forward to competing against the state and hopefully meeting people.
Seymour said it gives the athletes a chance to get out of the community and go play some golf on other coauses and meet other people that they can compete against for the rest of their lives.
