With the ice melted on both the streets and indoors, the Havre Ice Dome will be open for a variety of inline skating events throughout the summer beginning Friday, May 21.
Friday the rink will be open from 7 to 9 p.m. for recreational inline skating. The Ice Dome will have its summer grand opening celebration Saturday, May 22 from 7 to 9 p.m. Taco Johns will be on site with its taco cart, selling tacos at two for $1.
The rink will continue to be open on Friday and Saturday evenings from now until the end of September.
Marc Ballard, a volunteer with the Ice Dome, said that the summer openings resulted from a survey given to Havre High and Havre Middle School students. Ballard said he expected to receive 30 surveys in response, but he was inundated with 125. An additional 104 informal responses were received from students in grades five and below.
The recreational inline skating will be supervised by adult volunteers from several local organizations and business, including the United Way, The Havre Daily News, Donovans Jewelry and Townhouse Inns.
Stick and Puck, an informal hockey game, will also be available at the Ice Dome. Times and dates for this activity have yet to be determined.
Ballard said that helmets are not required, but are recommended for all skaters. He would also like to public to be advised that the wheels that normally come on a pair of inline skates are designed for street surfaces, making them very slick on a smooth surface like the Ice Dome. Skaters should obtain wheels made from a softer material or adapt their skating style accordingly.
Businesses will also be sponsoring free nights through out the summer. The businesses will provide the volunteers and cover the rink cost.
If an individual or business would like to volunteer, has questions or would like to sponsor a night at the cost of $75 the should contact either Ballard at 265-8114 or Kris Kemmer at 265-6628.
