It was a great day for baseball on Sunday as the Havre Northstars and Comets had a match-up. The older, more experienced Northstars showed what they had and beat the Comets 21-3.
The Northstars got things started off right, as Jake Ingram hit a double and then scored on an Alan Mapes single to give the Northstars a 1-0 lead.
In the top of third, the Comets got their bats working as Jordan Anderson, Chris Young, and Jared Boyce all scored runs. C.J. Reichelt picked up a pair of RBIs to give the B team a 3-1 lead.
The Northstars answered in the bottom of the third, putting up three runs of their own to regain the lead, 4-3.
Both teams had a short fourth inning, but in the bottom of the fifth the Northstars came alive with five runs on four hits. After five complete, the Northstars led 9-3.
The next two innings saw nothing from the Comets, as they were sat down in order in the sixth and seventh innings. However in that same time, the Northstars picked up 12 runs. They scored five in the sixth and seven in the seventh.
To sum it up, the Northstars scored 21 runs on 20 hits and five Comet errors, while the Comets came through with three runs on three hits and two North Star errors.
Both teams rotated their players through out the nine inning game. For the Northstars, Ricky Brown, Ryan Evans, Jarrod Wirt and Mapes all took the mound. For the Comets it was David Knight, Boyce and Nick Newell all pitching.
North Star coach Micky Williams said the Comets played well for the first two innings, and his Northstars came out flat. Williams said it was a good experience for all involved.
Since the beginning of the season, Williams said he is impressed with how the B team has come along, and it should improve through out the season.
The Northstars also hit the ball very well in the inner-squad game and, Williams said, he was pleased with that.
Comets coach Ryan Divish said he has to give the Northstars credit for playing a good game. Divish said they Stars have a legitimate shot at being on the of the toughest teams in the state.
Divish said his team played well early, but it was just a matter of time before the Northstars would start hitting the ball. Also, Divish said his team need to get used to the intensity of the game at the high level.
The one area were the Comets lack is their pitching, Divish said. But, he did add that they are out there with the main goal of improving every week and developing these younger athletes into future Northstars.
Next up for both the Northstars and the Comets is the Northstars Invitational tournament this weekend at Havres Legion Field.
Williams said they have some of the best teams from around Montana, Idaho and Canada coming to play in the tournament, and it should be a weekend of fun baseball.
The tournament starts Thursday afternoon and runs through Sunday.
