Locals shine at Big Sky State Games

By Tiffany L. Rehbein

Big Sky State Games. Its the largest amateur competition in Montana that gives athletes of all ages the opportunity to compete against state-wide talent.

Jeff Sprinkle, a 13-year-old Havre Middle School student, said he found the games cool. Sprinkle holds the local middle school record in the one-mile run with a time of 5:12.25 and is currently undefeated in the race.

At Billings last weekend, in his first year at the Big Sky games, he ran in the road race, collecting a silver in the 5K and capturing the gold in the 10K.

Next year, however, he will compete in the older age group, so he hopes to compete in the track and field portion of the games.

Other area record setters also competed at the games.

Its the thrill of competition, said Jamie Sharples of Chinook. Thats what keeps him coming back.

Sharples holds the state games record in the 50 meter backstroke with a blazing time of 35.01. He set the mark last year but could not break it this year.

The water was terribly cold, he said about the unheated pool. It was one of the coldest pools Ive ever swum in.

The cold only slowed Sharples on the first day. He placed second in the 100 freestyle and disqualified in the 100 backstroke.

However, he redeemed himself on day two by capturing three golds; in the 50 meter freestyle, 50 meter backstroke and 50 meter butterfly.

I like a good race, Sharples said. I dont care if I win or if I lose, I still like the excitement of competition.
