Fort Belknaps Milk River Days and Pow-Wow, July 30-Aug. 1, gets going this week with camp day Thursday. The annual celebration officially kicks off at 1 p.m. Friday with the three-mile parade from the Agency to the powwow grounds at New Town on Rte. 66.
The first grand entry is set for 7 p.m. Friday, according to organizer Margaret Horn. Subsequent grand entries (intertribals) are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
George Stiffarm is again holding the Mosquito Run, a blistering, shadeless 5K (3.1 mile) and 1 mile walk/runs early Saturday morning. The run will begin after the runners are trucked to the starting lines south on Rte. 66. For the cost of the event, all runners receive Mosquito Run T-shirts and the chance to win awards and prizes at the post-race gathering.
Horn said that a new event planned for this year is a Saturday night candlelight, clean and sober get together sponsored by the Fort Belknap CDC.
Milk River Days features numerous food and crafts booths and all of the colorful fun that powwows have to offer.
Everyone is welcome to attend Milk River Days and all are reminded that the celebration is an alcohol- and drug-free event.
