Northstars travel to state tournament

The Havre Northstars are so good, they get to enjoy a first-round bye at the state baseball tournament in Lethbridge on Thursday.

The Northstars brought home the district tournament trophy from Great Falls last Sunday easily defeating four teams en route to the championship. The Northstars outscored its opponents 73-11 at districts.

We need to continue where we left off this weekend, said head Northstar coach Mickey Williams. It starts with good pitching and we need to keep our bats moving.

The Northstars will play the winner of the south versus central team who advanced to state.

Alan Mapes has the start for the Stars on Saturday, July 31, at 1 p.m. Mapes allowed only one hit at the district tournament when his team went on to blank Vauxhall 21-0 last Friday.

If the Northstars continue in the winners bracket, they will play four games in the tournament that begins July 29 and runs through August 4. However, if they lose and move into the losers bracket, they would play seven games in the true double elimination tourney.
