From foot race to barrel race

By Tiffany L. Rehbein

Horsemanship was defined as one of the finest arts known to mankind. When Bob Sivertsen, announcer at the Havre Junior Rodeo, said it, he meant it.

That statement was never more true than when Chelsea Brown smoked around the barrels clocking in at 15.42 in the 4--8-year-old division. It was never more true when Debran Robison opened the pole bending event with the event-winning time of 24.82 in the 14-18-year-old division.

Nor was it more true when Denali Solomon closed out the 14-18-year-old barrel racing event clocking in the fastest time at 18.23. It was never more true when Gail Sivertsen blazed a breakaway roping time of 5.5 nor when three girls Cassidy Han, Katie Spicher and Jessica McIntosh were the only cutting-horse team to pen three cows for the top prize in the team penning event.

The kids rodeo, held as the grandstand entertainment event at the Great Northern Fair, had over 100 participants who competed for buckles, T-shirts and silver dollars.

Nick Owens captured the 4-6-year-old sheep riding event. Accompanied by his little tyke cowboys stitched to his sky blue shirt, Owens rode the wooly creature for 72 seconds to take the first place prize. All participants received silver dollars, courtesy of Ophus Auction Service.

Loreena Baird took second place riding for 65 seconds. Baird also placed second in the 4-8-year-old barrel racing event, where the younger kids run a shorter pattern, cloverleafing the barrels in 17.01. Baird outdistanced her opponents in the arena boot race to take home the top prize. All racers received a T-shirt for their efforts.

Only two cowboys rode the steers in the 9-13-year-old division to receive a belt buckle. Jesse Colliflower rode the last draw in the first section to a first place score of 72. Andrew Heller had the only other score, a 64, for the second place finish.

Brown not only scorched the path around the barrels, but she also drew the red flag and planted the flag in 8.72 to take first place in the flag racing event. Lindsay Gerky took second place, completing the event in 13.03.

After the tractor plowed through the packed earth surrounding the barrels, Larissa Baird opened the 9-13-year-old barrel racing event clocking a second place time of 19.09. Danielle Dirden won the event in 18.44.

Although there were no times in the 9-13-year-old breakaway roping, Kaci Owens managed the top prize in the goat tying event. After racing her horse from the starting point, catching and tying the little black goat, she clocked in at 23.8. Lynsey Waid placed second with a time of 24.35.

Roshon Nordland won the 9-13-year-old pole bending event in 23.77. Larissa Baird took home the second place buckle with a time of 26.03.

Six hundredth of one second separated Jessie French and Gail Sivertsen in the older barrel racing division. French clocked in at 14.2, scraping past Sivertsen who clocked in at 14.26.

Sivertsen redeemed herself well when, in the breakaway event, her horse only loped about eight times before she snagged the steer in 5.5. Solomon, who won the barrel racing event, finished second with a 6.9.

The Colliflower boys Jessie and Wade made team roping look easy when they took the event with a time of 24.72. But the excitement came when the last team, Jenna and Emily Bell, stepped in to rope.

To begin, Jenna fish-hooked the steer horns on her second loop. So, having only one chance to throw and one competitor to beat, Emily wound up. Her toss caught her own horses front feet in her loop with the steer legs. Keeping her rope slack, her horse got free while she managed to capture one steer leg. The timed in at 70 seconds.

The grand finale came when the penning team of Han, Spicher and McIntosh won their second straight team penning award. Han first cut the cow with the purple band around her neck. Then McIntosh crossed the line and cut the blue-banded, then the yellow-banded cow. The girls closed in and rounded the cows through the arena and into the pen. They did it in 1:36.44.

And they came one step closer to perfecting the craft of horsemanship.
