The fall edition of Adopt Havre has been declared a success by co-chairs Kim Cripps and Jeff Leeds, despite the small but brave crowd who bore the cold and rain to help clean up trash from Havre streets.
It was certainly a good day for the Kris Tibbets family who walked away with the events top prize of a weekend stay at Havres Townhouse Inn and food vouchers from The Kitchen donated by the Townhouse Inn.
The prize of a $40 gift certificate from Albertsons for the largest piece of trash went to Pam Henderson and family for a piece of chain-link fence.
The most unusual piece of trash award of a $15 gift certificate from Gary and Leos IGA went to Jen Vaughn, Haily Mclain, and Pat Toldness, who brought in a wheelbarrow tire.
Top individual trash collectors were Margaret Houser and Agnes Millner who together won an organizer from Coast to Coast in Havre and a dozen caramel rolls from Northern Lights Bakery.
Cripps thanked all of the businesses that contributed to the clean-up effort and extended a special thanks to Bob Rice and his crew for what she said was truckloads of trash picked up from alleys around Havre and to the Havre School system for the work they did at their respective schools. Also singled out for thanks were the volunteers that worked at the various redemption sites during the four-hour effort.
Cripps said, We should be reminded as we drive around that keeping Havre clean is a daily chore and should not be designated as only a two-day-a-year task.
She added that she was saddened that within two hours of cleaning (the) Sixth Avenue Ball Park, it was a pig sty again.
I hope your homes and yards do not look like this, she said. It is hard to show people your town and have to drive by the trash on our main street on a daily basis.
Cripps also asks that anyone with constructive ideas on how Adopt Havre can be improved should call her at 265-7845.
