BILLINGS Billings Central had two tries to beat Chinook Saturday, but was stopped on both as the Sugarbeeters held on to a 14-13 win against the Class A opponent.
The Beeters were up 14-7 when the Rams scored on a Travis Blome eight-yard run. Billings Central tried for the two-point conversion but failed. Chinook was called for a face mask on the play which gave the Rams a second try, but, again, they were unsuccessful.
Billing Central scored first in the game on a Ryan Grosulak one-yard run. Grosulack had been injured, and this was his first game back for the Rams. A Jake Sienko kick gave Billings Central a 7-0 lead.
Late in the second quarter, Chinook quarterback Mike Maddox took it in on a keeper from three yards out. Tyler Oehmeke drilled the point after to tie the game at half, 7-7.
The Beeters only other score came in the fourth quarter as Maddox found Mason Roseberry on a 17-yard scoring strike. The two had hooked up earlier in the game to set up Maddoxs previous touchdown run. Oehmeke kicked the extra point and put Chinook up 14-7.
After the Rams final touchdown, Chinook had the ball with two minutes to play but was forced to punt. Billings Central then had four incomplete passes to end its hopes of beating the Beeters.
Chinook head coach Scott Friede said they were able to go to Billings and move the ball well against a bigger defense. Friede said he was also happy with how his offense was able to move the ball, setting up two long scoring drives.
Friede said the Rams had a tougher team this year than in the last four meetings of the two schools and he was happy to beat the Class A opponent.
It was nice to get the win on the road, Friede said. We had our backs against the wall several times and the kids came through.
After a disappointing loss to Malta last weekend, Friede said, the win will help the teams confidence. Also, with a very big game against Glasgow this weekend, they will need that boost.
Friday nights game against the Scotties also is Chinooks homecoming and senior night. Friede said it will be a very emotional night for everyone.
