BIG SANDY -- Kathryn M. Lanik, 91, died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at a Great Falls hospital of natural causes.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at the Rohrer United Methodist Church in Big Sandy with the Rev. Connie Cranston officiating. Burial will be held at the Big Sandy Cemetery.

Lanik was born Sept. 24, 1908, in Shell Lake, Wisc., to Herman and Ida Ahrens. She spent several years in Wisconsin with her grandparents. She later moved with the family to east of Big Sandy and attended school at the Sunnyslope School. She also attended school at the Macton Mine, Coal Creek and Big Sandy. After the eighth-grade she went to Chauvet's to take care of their children.

On Dec. 11, 1926, she married Richard Lanik. The couple moved to Great Falls. The later moved back to southeast of Big Sandy where they raised wheat, pigs, chickens, beef and dairy cows. The couple traveled to Vienna once and to the coast many times.

Lanik enjoyed gardening, her Siamese cats, crocheting, reading, baking, talking on the phone, playing cards, collecting cookbooks and spending time with her grandchildren.

She was a volunteer 4-H leader for many years and was an active member of the Hopp-Iliad Homemakers Club and the Farmers Union.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Richard Lanik, a sister, Ida Mae Miner, brothers, Merle, Kenneth, and Howard Ahrens, and a daughter, Violet Drga.

Survivors include a son-in-law, Henry Drga; a sister, Ruth Harris of Bonney Lake, Wash.; brothers, Don Ahrens of Tacoma, Wash., and Wayne Ahrens of Riverton, Wyo.; a granddaughter and two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials are suggested to the Big Sandy Medical Center, the Big Sandy Historical Society, the Rohrer Methodist Church or the Big Sandy Branch Library.
