WHITLASH Louisa R. Allen Anderson, 94, died Sunday, May 2, 1999, at a Great Falls hospital.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Whitlash Community Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Ernest Doyle officiating. Burial will follow at the Whitlash Cemetery.
Anderson was born July 5, 1904, near East Butte, to Lester Stott and Nettie Alvord. She received her early education at country schools near the family ranch. She attended high school in Joplin and Great Falls.
On Nov. 29, 1923, she married Ted Allen at Whitlash. The couple took over the Whitlash general store in 1928. She became the Whitlash postmaster in 1928. He died in 1946.
She was employed with the post office for 46 years until her retirement in 1974. She was 70. She was recognized as the longest active postmaster in the United States.
After her retirement she resided in an apartment that was attached to the old general store. She converted the store into a free library and hobby and ceramic studio.
She enjoyed tatting, crocheting, gardening, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, reading, playing the piano, painting, ceramics, and traveling. She was a lifelong member of the Whitlash Presbyterian Church, and served as church pianist for many years. She was also a member of the Whitlash Homemakers Extension Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a son, Edwin Allen, a sister, Ellen McGee, a brother, Ray Stott, and a granddaughter, Tedi Ann Laas.
Survivors include daughters, Evelyn Aiken of Whitlash, Wini Barnett of Helena, and Golda Morrison of Chester; a daughter-in-law, Donna Allen of Oklahoma City, Okla.; a sister, Ruth Davis of Whitlash; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Rockman Funeral Chapel of Chester is in charge of arrangements.
