Grammy-winning solo pianist George Winston will put on a C.I. Carlson Foundation benefit concert at Havre High School at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 19.

Winston may perform some of C.I. Carlsons compositions and some of his own compositions that were inspired Carlson, HHS Band President Andrea Schatzka said.

Winstons repertoire definitely will include selections from his most recent CDs: Linus & Lucy The Music of Vince Guaraldi and All the Seasons of George Winston. Hell also perform other well-known songs from his other solo piano recordings, stride piano, R&B piano, and Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar.

Carlson was legendary band director at Havre High School for about 30 years. He came to Havre in 1946, his son Dave Carlson said, and retired officially in 1973. Carlson actually stayed on until 1976 as what the district called a music consultant, but he continued with a heavy schedule.

Carlson was selected as one of the top 10 high school band directors in the United States in 1965.

Dave Carlson, along with HHS band director Ron Coons, is carrying on his fathers tradition of quality music education in Havre schools as band director at Havre Middle School.

Proceeds from the concert will be used to award deserving HHS musicians with college scholarships upon graduation.

Cost of the concert is $8 per person or $7 for those who also donate one nonperishable food item at the door. All donated food items will be given to the North Havre Community Services Food Bank.

I think its a great opportunity for students and community members to hear good music while contributing to an important cause, Schatzka said.
