A dozen Havre High School Spanish students will put their lessons to the test this summer when they head south of the border to exotic Mexico.
The 12 Spanish Club students and their advisor Michael Scott will take a Havre school bus to Great Falls and board their flight to Mexico City on June 7. Theyre scheduled to return to Havre on June 18.
The students have spent the past two years working odd jobs and holding fund-raising projects to help defray the individual costs of their trip. The cost per student is $1,850 and club president Brandi Roman said theyve worked hard to cover their trip and expenses.
Weve already paid for our whole entire trip, she said.
Among their fund-raisers this year, the club members washed cars, sold Taco Johns discount punch cards, sold concessions at Blue Pony games and hamburgers at Gary and Leos IGA, and cleaned Blue Pony Stadium after home games.
They still have some Taco Johns cards left and will hold one last car wash this Sunday. The car wash will be held at Pizza Hut parking lot from 11 a.m. to about 4 or 5 p.m.
The proceeds will go to pay back the money they borrowed from their parents or as spending money (on the trip), Scott said.
The tour will include stops at several historical locations beginning with the flight to Mexico City. The students will pick up a private motorcoach, check into their hotel, and enjoy a walking tour of one of the worlds largest cities. Theyll stroll down Paseo de la Reforma, pass a monument to Christobal Col-n (Christopher Columbus), and visit the site where Mexicos first saint was born.
On day two, theyll go on a guided tour of Mexico City that will include stops at the Museum of Anthropology, Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and Teotihuacn Pyramids.
On day three, theyll travel to Veracruz, and then move on to Villahermosa on day four. Theyll visit both Villahermosa and Campeche and go sightseeing through landscapes of Tabasco to Palenque on day five.
On day six, theyll travel from Campeche to Mrida. Along the way, theyll journey through the jungle to tour the Mayan city of Uxmal.
On day seven, the students will share in a guided tour of Chichn Itz and visit Cenote X-Keken on their way to Cancn. Theyll stay in Cancn for three days of touring at Tulum and Xel-H, and to enjoy the citys tropical coastal waters.
