HHS graduating class enjoys last hurrah

By Ron VandenBoom

This years Havre High School graduates will have a host of senior weekend fun and entertainment available thanks to the efforts of Havre High School Senior Parents and numerous local organizations and businesses that have contributed cash and prizes.

The weekend is designed to provide enjoyable and safe activities for more than 160 graduates that will be memorable for years, said the letter sent to all parents who will have students graduating this year.

Six events have been planned for the seniors at locations around Havre. Prize drawings, including a drawing for a TV, VCR, refrigerator, and microwave, will also be awarded lucky winners who have attended all six of the events. Two optional events have also been planned.

Scholarships will also be given away to lucky winners during the drawings Tuesday night.

Tickets for the six events cost $20 and are available until 1 p.m. Wednesday at Havre High School. Students will also have the chance to purchase a $10 senior weekend T-shirt when they buy their tickets.

The first event of the weekend will be Monte Carlo bowling, to be held from 9-1 p.m. Friday, May 28, at Hi-Line Lanes. Students attending this event must arrive by 10 p.m. or they will not be admitted.

The fun continues on Saturday, May 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with the second event, a softball game at the Sixth Avenue Ball Park. It is not mandatory to play on a team to get credit for attending this event. Cheering fans are also needed.

Saturday from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. graduates can dance the night away at the All-Night Dance and Casino Night in the MSU-Northern SUB Ballroom. Students must arrive by 11 p.m. to get credit for this event.

Sunday, May 30, baccalaureate services will be held at 2 p.m. in the Havre High School auditorium. This event is not mandatory for the drawings.

A picnic and games event will be held following baccalaureate in Pepin Park. The picnic will be from 4:30-6:30 p.m. and if it rains it will be moved to the St. Jude Social Hall. This event is required for the drawings.

Monday, (Memorial Day), a ropes course will be offered in the MSU-Northern gym from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is not a mandatory event because of the Memorial Day holiday.

At 10:30 a.m. students will gather at the Havre Eagles Club for brunch. All seniors should check out through the school office before attending this event. This event too will count toward the drawings that will be held later in the day.

Graduation practice will be held at 1 p.m. and line-up will be at 7:15 p.m. with graduation ceremonies beginning at 8 p.m., but the final senior weekend event, the graduation dance, is scheduled from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Townhouse Inn meeting room in Havre. This is the last event graduates must attend in order to qualify for a chance to win prizes. The latest time participants can arrive is 10:30 p.m.

Students participating in track or tennis tournaments will be eligible for prizes by turning in their signed tickets. Students in Two Gentlemen from Verona will be admitted late.

Organizers report that 82 percent of the students were involved in 1998 and anticipate the same response this year.
