Havre Public Schools, in cooperation with Cascade County 4-H, is offering The Youth Empowerment and Self-Sufficiency (YESS!) Mini-Society Program again this summer. The program is limited to students who have completed second through sixth grade.
Marilyn Granell hosted one week-long session of the workshop at Lincoln-McKinley School last summer and has two sessions planned for Havre this summer.
The first session runs from June 14-18 at Devlin School and the second session runs from July 26-30 at Sunnyside. The workshops run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.
The cost per student per week is $10.
During the program, students will design and develop their own society, create a name, flag and currency. Students will identify tasks for which they will initially earn money, thereby infusing currency into their society and making it function.
Ultimately, the children will identify opportunities and establish their own businesses to provide goods and services to their fellow citizens.
I just see this as something for every kid who has ever wanted a Kool-Aid stand, said Laura Malisani, programs coordinator for HELP and Havre Public Schools.
Due to the nature of the program, registration is limited.
Students must have completed any grade from the second through sixth and are responsible for their own transportation and lunch.
Other support for the program has been pledged by First Security Bank, Bear Paw Credit Union, Bear Paw Development Corp. HELP and Havre Taxi are doing transportation. Students will be picked up at Oakwood and Carpenter Park.
