Bring it on, we will provide the ring

Even though its still a good 15 months until the general elections, the political hoopla has already begun, and by the way its stacking up, Montana may have some pretty big old-fashioned showdowns.

In one corner, weve got incumbent Republican Rep. Rick Hill squaring off against Democratic U.S. House Candidate Nancy Keenan.

Hills misguided criticism of Keenans lifestyle brought early attention to this race. Since then, weve watched support for Keenan grow like a road-side weed fast and persistent with little threat of wilting away. Add to that the $70,000 in campaign contributions made in her cause and, though its too early to call the race, Montana may see a new congressman er, congresswoman. Some say its about time.

On the other bench, our boot-wearing senator, incumbent Republican Conrad Burns, will be challenged by that Whitefish rancher and farmer, Democratic hopeful Brian Schweitzer.

Burns, who promised not to run again is, matter-of-factly, running again. Mr. Schweitzer, who wants to make an honest man out of (Burns) by defeating the incumbent next November, has begun the political pugilism that precedes such high-stake races.

When it comes to these races, the gauntlet has been laid. So, using Mr. Schweitzers motto, anytime, anywhere, we at the Havre Daily News would like to make a challenge of our own: To all candidates bring your words to Havre. Wed be happy to play host and sponsor a political debate. Well acquire the facility, present a monitor and give the debate and its participants the appropriate publicity both before and after the showdown.

The platforms available, the coverage is waiting, so bring your ideals to Havre and let the show begin.
