WILLIAM C. SHIELDS

HAYS William C. Shields, 97, died Aug. 2, 1999.

Wake services will be held Thursday evening at Red Whip Center. Graveside services will be held at sunrise Friday in the Big Warm Cemetery at Lodgepole.

Shields Assiniboine name was Male Raven.

Shields was born May 15, 1902 in Lodgepole to Took the Shield and Traveling Wind. He ranched east of Lodgepole for a while and worked as a range detective and peace officer. He also worked in the mines in Butte and Zortman.

Shields was a rodeo rider, competing in events such as saddlebronc and bareback. In his youth, he loved to sing Native American songs and composed many of his own. He spoke Assiniboine fluently.

Shields loved to hunt and fish and enjoyed playing all types of card games and playing pool.

Shields was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, one sister, and five children.

He is survived by sons, Rudy, Bo, and Joe Shields of Fort Belknap; daughters, Joanne Healy and Mercy Snell of Fort Belknap, and Brenda Marjamaki of Spokane, Wash.; 24 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Edwards Funeral Home of Chinook is in charge of arrangements.
