JAMES A. POORE III
MISSOULA James A. Poore III, 56, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, in Seattle, of complications resulting from treatment for an unexpected recurrence of disease.
Memorial services will be held 2 p.m Friday at the Castles Center in the lower level of the Law Library at The University of Montana School of Law in Missoula.
Poore was born to James A. Poore Jr. and Jesse Wild Poore in Butte. He graduated from Butte High School in 1961. He received a B.A. from Stanford University in 1965 and a J.D. with honors from The University of Montana in 1968. He was admitted to practice in state and federal Montana courts, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.
He practiced law for 31 years, including Havre for a time.
After clerking during law school for the Missoula firm of Garlington, Lohn & Robinson, he began his practice at his grandfathers law firm, with his father and uncle, in Butte. He was a partner in the firm now known as Poore, Roth & Robinson, P.C., until 1996. He recently began his own practice in Missoula.
He spoke at numerous legal seminars during his practice, and was listed in several editions of Whos Who. He was a member of the American Bar Foundation, American Bar Association, the State Bar of Montana, the Western Montana Bar Association, the American Judicature Society, Phi Delta Phi, and the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Institute. He also contributed to the School of Law and Law Library Expansion Project, and the Jameson Law Library.
Poore enjoyed law, cars, his small black cat, and the water which surrounded Missoula and Flathead, and in Maui, and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Shelley Hopkins Poore of Missoula; parents, James A. Poore, Jr., and Jesse Wild Poore of Flathead Lake; sons, James A Poore IV and Jeffrey Scott Poore of Rochester, N.Y.; a brother, Dr. George Poore of Jackson, Wyo.; sister, Elizabeth Wadsworth of Lolo, an aunt and uncle, and numerous cousins.
A scholarship in Poores honor has been established at the School of Law. Memorials are suggested to James A. Poore III, Law Student Scholarship through the University of Montana Foundation, PO Box 7159, Missoula, MT 59807.
