The Havre Middle School is starting a drama program this year.
Carmen Schafer, who is heading up the program, said that sixth-graders would participate in drama this fall. The seventh-graders drama program will be during the winter, she said, and the eighth-graders will have their program in the spring.
Try-outs for the sixth-grade production of Dont Give Up will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, in the Havre High School auditorium.
Any sixth-grader who tries out Friday night will get a part, Schafer said. Its important for them to know that everyone in the sixth grade who tries out will get a part.
The play begins with a 1955 Kansas school girl named Kelly wishing that she could live in a different place and time because of the abuse she takes as a nerd. Her guardian, Jake, grants her wish and she ends up at Havre Middle School in fall semester 1999.
Schafer said the girl is accepted at HMS but must still overcome the language barrier that exists between students in the 50s and 90s.
Eventually, the people from the 50s and 90s come together, she said, with the help of Kellys guardian, Jake.
The four main characters are Kelly, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Brown, and her guardian, Jake.
The playbill includes roles for 25 characters from the 1950s, including Betty, Archie, Reggie, Ronnie, Dick Clark, Elvis, plus between 10 and 25 jitterbuggers.
There are 23 characters from the 1990s, including Dick Clark, Shania Twain, Backstreet Boys, plus 10-25 dancers.
Students must have permission slips signed by their parents before the auditions. The permission slips will be collected from the students as they enter the auditorium through the west driveway door for the auditions.
Schafer said the curtain will go up on the production at 7 p.m. on Dec. 10 and 11.
