Each year, spectators and participants at the Great Northern Fair have an opportunity to judge the market animals at the Great Northern Fair and tell everyone which animals will have the best carcasses. A separate contest is held for sheep, beef, and pigs.
The 60 entries in this years contest indicate that the contest, as has occurred in previous years, was not as easy as many individuals thought. The top animals, if selected at all, were selected by very few people.
Doug Erhard won the beef judging contest. Anita Solberg placed second and Kristina Michels placed third. None of the participants in the beef contest selected the top carcass and only one person selected the second place carcass. The third-place carcass was selected by five participants and the number four and five carcasses were each selected by two entries. The most popular selection ranked 34th in the carcass contest.
Mary Hutchinson won the swine judging contest. Placing second was Kristina Michels and Ray Kallenberger placed third. Two people picked the top placing carcass and the second-place carcass was marked on two ballots. Nobody selected the third and fourth place carcasses and the fifth place carcass was selected three times. The most popular choice placed 45th.
The sheep judges also had a difficult time. Julie Strauser won the contest, Kristina Michels placed second and Ray Kallenberger placed third. Only two people picked the best lamb carcass. The second-place carcass was selected by two people and the most popular choice placed third.
Judging is very difficult 27 steers each received one or more votes for being one of the top four carcasses.
