Havre High harriers bring home top trophy

By Tiffany L. Rehbein

Blue and white dominated the Glasgow Invitational.

The Havre High cross country ladies won the team competition with 26 points Saturday.

Blue Ponies Jennie Peterson, Jen Dibblee and Jenna Baltrusch were the first three to cross the finish line. All three clocked in career-best times.

For the second consecutive week, Peterson placed first in the three-mile event. Saturday she clocked in at 19:16.

Senior Pony Dibblee finished second overall in 20:56 while freshman Baltrusch, who did not run last week at Belgrade, finished in 21:00.

The best thing was that we went in and looked real strong as a team, first-year head coach Kim Ray said. It looked good because we had our runners finish together.

In addition to the top three, junior Erin Lynch placed ninth with a season-high 22:09. All four girls were awarded trophies for their effort.

The trophies were extremely motivating for them, Ray said. It was big motivation for them to finish one, two, three.

More than 75 percent of the team set a season-high time on the course that was wet from a day-long rain.

The times were really good even with the weather, Ray said.

Twenty-six team points is a major accomplishment in cross country.

That is great, Ray said. Compared to a basketball game, it would be like we scored 100 points. I was really pleased with how they performed.

Junior Jillian Brough finished 11th overall in a time of 22:15. Junior Nikki Grant finished 16th in 22:55. Alicia Rundquist knocked almost two minutes off her previous time to finish in 23:28 in 21st place.

Carly Toldness finished in 25th in a time of 23:57. Teammate Stacey Siebrasse was close behind with a time of 24:23. Rachel Spangelo was 36th overall clocking in at 25:28. Cara Holmquist finished the race in 25:43. Nancy Cline rounded out the Ponies line-up finishing in 28:26.

Five other schools, Class A Sidney and Class B Glasgow, Wolf Point, Malta and Class C Brockton/Culbertson were represented.

Havre junior highers also competed in their first competition Saturday.

They finished behind Wolf Point with 48 team points.

Emily Kostelecky finished in fourth place with a time of 12:05 to lead Havre.

Amanda Laeupple and Alishia Crosby finished ninth and 10th with 12:42, 12:56, respectively.

Leandra Crosby, Goldie Dodson and Katie B. Jarvis finished in 13:31, 13:56 and 14:07, respectively, to round out the Pony roster.

The varsity will travel to Missoula to take part in the Mountain West Classic Saturday, one of the biggest competitions of the year.

The JV squad and junior high will be at Malta.
