GLADYS SARGENT
CHINOOK Gladys Sargent, 83, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at a Havre hospital of natural causes.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday in the American Lutheran Church of Chinook with burial following in the Kuper Memorial Cemetery.
Sargent was born Dec. 26, 1915, to Gunder and Amelia (Gjevre) Obie in Kremlin. She attended schools in Kremlin, Havre and Chinook. She graduated from Chinook High School in 1933.
On Jan. 27, 1934, she married Gaylord Sargent in Fort Benton. The couple owned and operated a store and the post office in Landusky until moving to Chinook to operate the family coal mine located north of Chinook. She did the bookwork, cooked for the miners, and was in charge of weighing the coal until 1949. He died in 1959.
She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed baking and visiting with her family and friends. She was active in the American Lutheran Church and traveled to Florida for the past four years.
Survivors include daughters, Shirley Wisch and Leah Miller of Chinook and Pat Vargus of Zephyrhills, Fla.; a brother, Gerhardt Obie of Chinook; a sister, Ella Sargent of Billings; six grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a brother, Edgar G. Obie, in 1993.
Memorials are suggested to the American Lutheran Church of Chinook or to the Gift of Life Housing in Great Falls.
