FORT BELKNAP -- An assistant U.S. attorney in Great Falls said this morning that a juvenile was charged Monday in connection with the stabbing death of a Fort Belknap man early Saturday morning.
Lori Harper Suek of the U.S. Attorney's Office in Great Falls confirmed that a juvenile was charged but declined to give his name because he is a juvenile.
Suek did confirm that Warren John Matte, 24, was fatally stabbed at his home near the Agency at about 5 a.m. Saturday. Matte was taken to the Public Health Service Hospital at the Agency where he was declared dead.
A Great Falls Tribune story this morning identified Matte's brother-in-law, Wally Bear, 17, of Billings, as the suspect. Suek refused to confirm Bear as the suspect.
Suek said the youthful suspect was formally charged in federal court in Great Falls Monday with violating the Juvenile Delinquency Act. The charges were filed in front of U.S. Magistrate Judge Richard Cebull.
Eric Greene of The Tribune reported in his article that witnesses said Bear stepped in with the knife to break up an argument between his sister Amber and Matte over the couple's car keys.
Matte is survived by his wife and children: twin 2-year-old daughters, Paige and Jade, and 5-year-old stepson, Jeremy.
