Three more KG school records fell by the wayside this weekend as Jake Stuart broke the 400-meter record with a winning time of 51.48 seconds. Both the 400 and 1600 relay teams also broke school records with times of 45.54 and 3:37.9, respectively. Both times were good enough for second place at the Cut Bank Invitational.
The KouGars took first place on the boys side and seventh on the girls side.
KG also took first place in the 1600 as Travis Stehman finished with a time of 4:27. Trevor Stehman finished second in the 3200 with a time of 10:23. Rhett Crites returned to action this weekend after an injury and took first in the high jump, clearing 5-11. Crites also finished third in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump. Stuart took the medal in the javelin with a toss of 181-4. The other first-place finish for KG was put up by Jared Miller, who topped the field in the pole vault as he cleared 11-6.
On the girls side, the only two first-place finishes were handed in by Christin Smith who won both the 1600 and 3200 with times of 5:32.38 and 12:05.85, respectively. Jenny Jorgenson also had a good afternoon as she took third in the 100 hurdles with a 16.99. Jorgenson finished fourth in the long jump with a leap of 14-11 and sixth in the high jump as she cleared 4-8.
KG coach Paul Anderson said he is happy his team did well this weekend. Anderson said it was nice to see a close race between KG and Chester. Anderson said he was also happy to see the good performances out of Crites and Jorgenson after being out with injuries.
Im happy to have them competing instead of sitting on the side, Anderson said.
The KouGars travel to the Cascade Top Eight this weekend before coming to Havre on Saturday.
Anderson said they will use the Havre meet to try and tune up as they get ready for Districts.
This is a great facility for us, and its better than the dirt tracks. Anderson said.
The Chester Coyotes took second on the boys side and third on the girls side at the Cut Bank Invitational.
For the Coyotes, it was Brent Riggin winning the 200 with a time of 23.81. Riggin also place third in the 100. The Coyotes only other top spot came from the 1600 relay team as they crossed the finish line in 3:36.2. Jeff Graham made a good showing as he took second in the 300 hurdles with a time of 43.09 and was fourth in the 110 hurdles and the triple jump. In the javelin, the Coyotes took second and third place with Eric Kleinsasser throwing a 180-7 and Lance Evans a 159-6. Ryan Gagnon helped Chesters cause as he took second in the 400 with a time of 51.95. Gagnon also took third in the 200.
For the Coyotes on the girls side, it was Michelle VanDyke picking up the only top finish as she cleared 5-2 in the high jump. Annie Diemert finished second in the shot put with a push of 32-5. Diemert also finished third in the discus. Carlene Jensen also had a second place finish as she threw the javelin 122-11.
Blue Sky was also in attendance at the Cut Bank Invitational and the Eagles put up some good numbers.
On the boys side for Blue Sky, it was Jason Horel getting the job done in the discus and winning the event with a throw of 152-8.5. Horel finished fifth in the shot put. Reed Peterson turned in a second place finish in the high jump as he cleared 5-10. Ryan Schneitzmeier finished fourth in the high jump. The girls side saw Carlye Redding edge the field in the triple jump with a 32-6. Redding took third place in the long jump.
Blue Sky head coach Bill Mulvaney said they are excited and overall have seen a lot of improvement before going into district. The Eagles are seeing a lot of good times and jumps getting better.
The Eagles will attend the Big Sandy meet on Wednesday, then the Top Eight on Thursday at Cascade and then Saturday in Shelby.
Overall, the Eagles have some work to do, according to Mulvaney, but, he added, they are better off than they were a couple of weeks ago.
Turner and Hays-Lodgepole both competed this week at the Malta Invitational.
The Tornadoes Brandon Sparks finished second in the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.68 and was fifth in the 300 hurdles with a 46.37. Shimon Takoi finished tied for third in the high jump, clearing 5-4.
For the Thunderbirds it was Ervin Doney taking fifth in the discus with a throw of 109-2.5
Big Sandy, Rocky Boy, J-I, and Box Elder did not compete because of the weather.
