FORT BENTON It is May but the Havre golf team was snowed out of the Cut Bank Invitational this weekend but did compete at the Fort Benton Invitational and took top honors in both the boys and the girls teams.
On the boys side it was Jason Johnstone shooting a 76 to win the meet. Nick Obie took second with a 78. Kevin Harada was sixth for the Blue Ponies with a score of 83. The Havre team was rounded out by Kyle Sheppard who shot a 92 and Matt Felt who shot a 95.
For the girls all five golfers placed in the top 10. Shanda Lammerding had the lowest for Havre with a 98, which was good for third place. Lisa Wagner took fourth with a score of 100. Tiffany Obie had a 113, which put her in eighth. Jessica Sanda finished ninth with a 117 and Katie Springer was 10th with a 117.
Havre golf coach Keith Evenson said they posted some pretty high scores and with divisional and state coming up will need to drop the scores to be in the middle of the pack at the worst.
Evenson said Johnstone played very well and bogeyed the last whole but is playing consistently.
At this point in the season Evenson said he though the boys team would be a little strong and more consistent but said they will get there in the last couple of meets.
It was only 38 degrees when the first round started but it did get warmer as the day progressed and the scored got better in the second round as in Wagner whos second nine was better by six strokes.
Evenson said the weather did not effect the boys as much as the girls.
They dont hit the ball as long and when the course is wet they dont get the roll, Evenson said.
The Blue Ponies get ready to round out the year with a trip to Lewistown on Tuesday with a pair of Class A powerhouse scheduled to be there in Billings Central and Laurel. Laurel has been state champions the last two years. Billing Central always has a strong girls team and the Blue Ponies need to play well to compete with them, Evenson said.
