The United Ways day of caring will officially kick off tomorrow, May 7, but work to restore Havres Domestic Abuse Shelter has already begun.
Baltrusch Construction donated two workers, a John Deer back hoe and a disposal truck on Tuesday and commenced to demolish the safe homes antiquated garage. Before the demolition began, a pencil scribbling was found on one of the garages planks dated 1932.
Wayne Nold, operator of the back hoe, raised the bucket and destroyed the garage one bite at a time. Within a period of 15 minutes, the rickety, wooden two-car garage was reduced to a pile of splintered boards and debris.
United Way of Hill County director Tracie Pyette said that a storage shed, bought at cost from Coast to Coast, will go to replace the garage.
Inside the home, Valley Furniture donated and laid new carpet in several bedrooms and a playroom.
The shelter, known as the Haven, offers women and children who are victims of domestic abuse a place to stay in order to get back on their feet. Pyette said the shelter sees a constant flow, and receives approximately 260 occupants in the course of a year. The shelter offers counseling, job training and sanctuary to those who take refuge within.
Pyette said that anyone interested in helping out with the beautification of the shelter, both inside and out, are encouraged to call her at 265-6561. The Day of Caring will commence on May 7 at 7 a.m. at the Feed My Sheep kitchen. Those interested in volunteering should meet there for breakfast, Pyette said.
