Its unfortunate that oft times it takes a tragedy to make us take a hard look at the world around us. But such is human nature; to develop a form of protective tunnel vision only shattered by acts of extremity.
So it has been in recent weeks with the number of violent incidents at schools dotted around the country. Weve been awakened to take a hard look at the media, the entertainment industry, the music industry, public schools, and our own hearts.
It has also put a new focus on family and the question of its supposed demise.
With the awakening has also come the need to blame.
People speak of the way it use to be. Of families staying together forever, of divorce as a four-letter word, of a mom who cooked the bacon that dad brought home, of simpler, kinder, better times.
But the point is, we cant go back nor should we. We can only move forward and build from here.
Sunday is Mothers Day. For at least one day, lets put away the blame and remember the positive things, not just about mother, but the family. The simple things, the complex things, the things that make us who we are today and what we will be tomorrow.
Let's not lament the bygone days of traditional mothers, but honor mothers all the working mom, the stay at home mom, the step-mom, the single mom, and the dad who is mom, too.
And as we gather with our families, lets keep a silent thought in our hearts for the mothers and fathers who are suffering the most devastating loss a parent can face. The loss of a child.
Another milestone day will come to pass in Havre this weekend as Montana State University-Northern holds its commencement on Saturday, sending graduates out into the real world.
We congratulate these men and women, and hope these graduates take with them into future, not only the degree and education theyve worked so hard to achieve, but a sense of compassion and community. As you scramble to find your place in this world, never forget your responsibility to make it a better place.
