I honestly believe that May is one of the most beautiful times of the year. By now, the threat of snow is mostly nonexistent (knock on wood!), the trees are turning green, and flowers are beginning to come into full bloom. It is no wonder someone chose this month to honor our mothers!
As we all (hopefully) know, this Sunday is Mothers Day 1999. When I decided to write about mothers this week, I couldnt help but to ask myself what this title means to me. I am fortunate enough to be blessed with two mother figures, both of which are caring, nurturing, and at certain times in my life, perhaps even a little overprotective! Mothers are very often times the ones who cook, clean, watch over us, and help us with all of those little problems that seem so major to us.
With all of the roles women play in society today, however, I feel the need to mention a few special kinds of mothers. First of all, many of us know working single mothers, who also support the family as well as play the role of both a mother and a father. Perhaps we should mention grandmothers who look over us and sometimes even assume a motherly role in our mothers absences, or even those single fathers who are raising children on their own. These are all very special types of mothers.
My mother once told me when I was little, You will never meet anyone who takes as good of care of you as I do. The older I become, the more I find this quote to be true. As a child, I could never imagine being without my mother, and I was convinced at the age of four that I was going to live with her forever. As the time for us to part grows nearer and nearer, however, it is sometimes sad to think that soon I will not have someone to take care of me when I am sick, or comfort me when I am sad in the same way that a mother can.
In short, I encourage everyone to put their mother (or anyone in your life who plays this role), on a bit of a pedestal this mothers day weekend. Not only do they deserve it, but it is also a way we can give a little back for everything they have given us.
