After a three-month stint as MSU-Northerns interim Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, Roger Barber has been appointed permenantly, the university announced Monday afternoon.
Chancellor Mike Rao recommended Barber to the Board of Regents for the position of Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor after a lengthy interview and screening process. Nearly 11 resumes were received for the position from around the county.
Chancellor Rao said the three qualified candidates were selected from the field; Dr. Roger Bates, Dr. David Carl and Dr. Barber. Each candidate was interviewed extensively by several campus groups, who in turn submitted their findings to Rao.
Following a thorough review in a national search, and after consulting with the campus community and the broader community, Im very pleased to recommend Roger Barber as the Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor of MSU-Northern, Rao said in a phone interview following the nomination. Im looking forward to working with Dr. Barber. I think he will work hard to help us accomplish our vision.
Barber received his bachelors degree, Masters of Business Administration degree, and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Montana-Missoula. He has been with MSU-Northern since 1978, serving as a professor of business, the chair and acting dean of the business department and the interim vice chancellor of academic affairs, to which he was appointed in February. He takes part in several community organizations, such as community concert, the United Way and the Sands Foundation.
The search committee cited Barber for his honesty, straightforwardness, organization skills and ability to work effectively with critical issues at hand.
I was cautiously hopeful, but realistic, Barber said. Its a little scary, but its very exciting. My duties will expand with more budgeting authority.
Barber said that Rao is still defining the position.
