I cant believe those four years of high school are already gone! Right now, that is what many HHS seniors are saying, with less than two weeks of school left to go. To many graduates, the biggest concerns of the past few months have consisted of announcements, pictures, caps, and gowns. Some have been planning the annual Senior Weekend, while others are simply content counting down the days until graduation. With all the planning, anticipation, and excitement of the big day, there hardly seems time to worry about the biggest even of all: the future.
Of course, some students do have a plan as to what they want to do after high school, but all too many students have no idea or goals for the future. So many of young people have not considered the fact that, after graduation, it is going to be time to go out into the real world. Some may go to college or begin learning a trade through an apprenticeship, while others may enter the work force. Either way, this is the time that people are expected to financially support their children to the extent they have in the past. Many young people will chose to move out, or look for a place of their own. No matter what decision they decide to make, they need to have a plan. Here are some questions to ask yourself as a graduate: What do I really want to do for a living? Is college the right road for me? What training do I need to succeed in the career I hope to pursue?
Students of all grades need to seriously consider these factors at all levels of school, not only during their senior year. These are elements that need to be contemplated long before they actually arrive. If they are not, the reality of growing up entering the real world will be a harsh blow. Graduation means more than simply completing a few final grades of book work, or gaining freedom to do as we please. It is a time in a students life that opens the door to his future.
