Seven meet records fell by the way side and one was tied this week as District 9C teams converged on Havre for the district meet.
The KG boys and the Big Sandy girls won the team titles with the top five finishers qualifying for the Northern C Divisional meet to be held next Thursday in Great Falls. All seven district teams qualified athletes for the divisional meet.
Jake Stuart set two new records as he won the 400 meters with a time of 52.30 seconds and broke the record of Turners Kevin Keller which stood at 52.40. Stuart also shattered the meet record in the javelin. The old record of Jeff Groseclose of Blue Sky stood at 180 feet and 5.5 inches and Stuarts throw was 197-0. Travis Stehman broke his own records he set last year in the 1600 and 3200. This year Stehman ran a 4:30.6 in the 1600 and in the 3200 had a time of 9:41.6. Rhett Crites tied a meet record in the 100 with a time of 11.3 and now holds the record with Chris Kline of Blue Sky and James Al of KG.
Stuart also won the high jump, clearing 6-2 but failing at 6-5 which would have tied the meet record. Crites also won the long jump with a leap of 20-7.25 and the 300 hurdles with a mark of 42.6 Justin Antonich took to honors in the 110 hurdles with a 15.8. In the 200 it was Eric Marshall beat the field with a time of 24.10. Joey Stuart jumped 48-6 in the triple jump to win the event. Both the 400 and 1600 relay teams also captured titles, running a 46.5 in the 400 relay and a 3:44 in the 1600 relay.
On the girls side for the KouGars it was Christin Smith setting two new meet records. In the 1600 Smith broke Big Sandys Stephanie Aments record of 5:31.8 with a time of 5:25.4. In the 3200 Smith broke her own record from last year with a time of 11.36.10, beating her record by almost 20 seconds. Jenny Jorgenson also had a good day for KG as she won the triple jump with a leap of 34-3.5 and also the 100 hurdles as she recorded a 17.2. Finally for the KouGars it was Marisa Hanson winning the javelin with a throw of 96-9.5.
KG coach Paul Anderson said this was a very good start for the post-season. Anderson said he though it would be a good day for his team. Anderson added that there was not a lot of competition and they did get almost every body through to divisional. Next week though Chester will give the KouGars a run for their money. Jorgenson and Smith should do even better next week at divisionals.
Work starts now this is the first step, Anderson said.
As for the pressure on the KG boys team after taking second last year and expected to do well this year Anderson said after the past success of the athletes in cross country, football and basketball they should be prepared.
They are mentally tough and athletically gifted and I hope it pays off in track as well, Anderson said.
The Big Sandy girls team was on the mark as Jenny Silvan vaulted over 8-0 to win the pole vault. Silvan also was tops in the 300 hurdles with a time of 52.50. Kristi Upham got a pair of gold medals as she won the 100 with a mark of 13.7 and the 200 with a 28.4. Eryn Darlington had a good day as she picked up the win in the 400 and recorded a 67.4. Darlington also was tops in the shot put with a push of 28-10. Both the Pioneers 400 and 1600 relay teams ran to the win with times of 55.3 and 4:39.2, respectively.
On the boys side for Big Sandy Mark Nelson set a new meet record as he leaped over 12-6 in the pole vault to beat the record held by Shawn Rettig of Big Sandy at 12-4. Mace Mangold was second in the event and Lance Nelson was third. Ross Runnion also came out and won the 800 with a time of 2:11.9.
The Blue Sky Eagles had a good day as they took second in the boys and third in the girls team scores.
For the boys Jason Horel beat the field in the discus with a throw of 137-0, Horel also took second in the shot put. Other Eagles to do well were Dan Mikulecky who took second in the 800, David Jurenka was second in the 400 and Reed Peterson was third in both the 100 and 300 hurdles.
The Blue Sky girls picked up a couple of top spots as Bethany Chinadle threw the discus 89-11 to win the meet. Carlye Redding was jumping well as she was tops in the long jump, with a leap of 16-1.5. Redding also finished first in the high jump as she cleared 4-10. Redding also finished second in the triple jump, 100 and 200.
Blue Sky coach Bill Mulvaney said he was pleased with both the boys and girls teams.
We had some really good performance by all our athletes, Mulvaney said.
Now Mulvaney said he is glad to be moving on to next level and the opportunity to get as many on to state as possible.
Mulvaney added that he was really happy how his athletes came out and competed hard and had a really good day.
The athletes are excited about moving on and Mulvaney said he is hoping that they are able to get ready and move on up to state but he did say the competition will now get a lot tougher.
Turner took fourth in both the boys and girls and will be sending some athletes on to divisionals.
For the Turner boys Brandon Sparks was second in both the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles with times of 15.9 and 42.7, respectively. Sparks also qualified in the triple jump with a leap of 38-6. W.K. Sanguins took third in the shot put with a push of 38-9, he also took third in the discus with a throw of 117-11. Sanguins also took third in the javelin with a toss of 175-10.75. The final qualifier was Shimon Takoi who took third in the long jump with a leap of 18-3.5.
On the girls side for the Tornadoes Lisa Woods took fifth in the 100 with a time of 14.6, and fifth in the 200 with a 30.70. Woods recorded a 69.8 in the 400 which was good enough for fourth place. Michi Seydler qualified in both the long jump with a third place jump of 14-7.25 and took third in the triple jump with a leap of 30-7. Turners 400 relay team also qualified with a time of 60.30.
Hays-Lodgepole qualified athletes for the divisional meet. Jeremy Walker took fifth in the 400 with a time of 59.10. Ervin Doney also qualified as he took fifth place in the discus with a throw of 109-3. Both 400 and 1600 relay teams also qualified as they took third in the 400 with a time of 53.7 and took fourth in the 1600 with a time of 4:26.60.
The Box Elder Bears had just three athletes out for track but have qualified for divisionals. Josephine WindyBoy took fifth in the 1600 with a time of 6:40.10. Tessie LaMere qualified by taking fifth in the shot put with a push of 26-5 and also took fifth in the discus with a throw of 75-6. LeMere also took third place in the javelin with a toss of 85-6.
Rocky Boy qualified a pair of athletes as Darrell Sunchild showed up in the shot put and won the competition with a throw of 42-1.5. Jesse Poolaw also qualified as he took fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:22.40.
