Jury selection starts trial

The trial of a 40-year-old Havre man accused of having sex with a juvenile girl began with jury selection Monday morning in 12th Judicial District Court.

Victor Gardner, 40, is charged with having sexual intercourse without consent with a girl under 16 years of age at their North Havre home. The incidents allegedly occurred between Aug. 10, 1997, and April 29, 1998.

Gardner faces a fine of up to $50,000 plus a $20 prosecution fee and $5 surcharge and a prison sentence of between four and 100 years if found guilty.

The trial is expected to last through Wednesday.
