The American Red Cross blood drawing conducted by the Bear Paw Chapter at Van Orsdel United Methodist Church Monday far exceeded the organizers expectations.
With only 72 donors making advance appointments, the drawing was expected to fall far short of Havres long-standing 110 unit quota. Instead of attracting a typical small summertime, vacation turnout, though, the drawing attracted more than 50 walk-in donors.
We had a tremendous response from our walk-ins, drive chairwoman Karen Golden said. We only 72 appointments, but 52 walk-ins.
The chapter ended up collecting 116 usable units of blood from the 124 people who showed up to deliver the gift of life.
Having read the article (about blood shortages), I think thats why a lot of people came in, Golden said. We had a guy come in and say, They need me.
The next Bear Paw Chapter of the American Red Cross public blood drawing in Havre is scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 13, at Van Orsdel United Methodist Church.
