Baseball alumni ready for reunion

By Tiffany L. Rehbein

Its the classic game of dungarees and hard balls, wooden bats and windy fields. And its time for the young and the old, the veterans and rookies, to come together in head-to-head, hard-hitting baseball style.

Baseball alumni, young and old, will meet the Comets, the younger, and the Northstars, the older, in an alumni baseball tournament on Saturday, Aug. 7, at Legion Field.

This should be a good time, said Dave Fanning, organizer of the event. In the past its been a good time.

The alumni game has been played off and on for the past 15-20 years, Fanning said. Organizers of the event hope to renew interest in the game that will enable it to run annually.

We want to encourage parents, alumni, everybody, Fanning said.

But this year its more than just baseball. To kick off the weekend, a par-3, four-man scramble golf tournament will be held at Beaver Creek Golf Course. The tournament, that will start at 5 p.m., is open to the public and $15 covers all fees.

On Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m., the Comets will play the old, old-timers, as termed by Fanning. Immediately following, the Northstars will take on the young old-timers.

A barbecue will follow the games. For $20, all players get a T-shirt and food. The public is welcome to this event and $5 covers the barbecue for adults, $3 for children. Northstars and alumni T-shirts will be on sale.

All proceeds from the golf tournament, baseball game and barbecue go to support Havre Youth Baseball.
