HOUSTON Havre golf icon Nick Obie shot an 84 after one round in the boys division of the 31st annual Independent Insurance Agent Junior Classic Tuesday.

Obie shot a 39 on the front nine and a 45 on the back nine at the tournament that is termed one of the most prestigious junior golf tournaments in the country. The tournament is one of the legs of the grand slam junior golf circuit that is being held at Houstons Northgate Country Club.

Obie qualified for the tournament earlier this summer at Bozeman and is competing in a field of 180 golfers 132 boys and 48 girls.

Although other Montana golfers have been chosen in the past to play at this tournament, no Montanan has ever made it past the first cut. The cut will take place after the second round on Wednesday where the field will be shortened to 63 boys and 21 girls.

Megan McDonald of Bozeman also qualified for the tournament. She shot a 93 after one round.
