The American Cancer Society is looking to make the Relay for Life a permanent fixture in the Havre community.
Based on the events local success last June, American Cancer Society Representative Wendy McKamey said an organizational meeting will be held on Oct. 5 to develop a local unit willing to hold the annual fund-raiser.
Well be talking about the Relay for Life and what it is, McKamey said. Well be showing a video, setting up monthly meetings and formulating a committee.
McKamey said the event is the American Cancer Societys premier fund-raiser. Calling it the flagship of fund-raisers, she said the Relay for Life held in Havre last June was an exploration event, of sorts, to see if the Havre community would be supportive of cancer fund-raisers. The results, McKamey said, have earned the community the right to take the next step.
It was a great turnout for what we were planning, McKamey said. We wanted people to get an idea of what the relay was all about, and we see a lot of potential in Havre.
The first and last Relay for Life held in Havre was last June, when Doris and Leonard Zellmer sponsored the late-night event.
McKamey said that because of Montanas demographics, comprised of an aging population, the state has a high level of cancer. By holding the local relay events, funding is provided to cancer research and support groups.
Theres a tremendous number of people who have cancer throughout the state, McKamey said. The Relay for Life helps fund patient services in this area, and sends money to cancer research institutes.
McKamey said the Relay for Life is a community, family-oriented event which lasts for approximately 12 hours and shows a dedication and commitment to fighting cancer. It also shows support for those who are fighting the disease.
Anyone interested in helping with the Relay for Life should attend our meeting, McKamey said. That includes all interested parties, both young and old.
The organization meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in room 113 of the Hagener Science Center at Montana State University-Northern.
