MARTIN MONSON

Martin O. Monson, 66, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 1999, at a Havre care center after a lengthy illness with a lung disease.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Messiah Lutheran Church with the Rev. John Gronli officiating.

Monson was born Oct. 22, 1933, to Andrew and Selma (Hanson) Monson in Glendive. He grew up in Glendive graduating from high school in 1952. He attended Dawson Community College in Glendive for two years. He received his teaching certificate from Concordia in 1956.

In 1956 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1958. He returned to Montana.

On Aug. 9, 1959, he married Margaret Goedert in Poplar. The couple moved to Erskine, Minn., for a year while he taught school. They moved to Havre in 1960. While teaching he attended summer school at the University of Montana receiving his Master's degree in 1972. He retired in 1995 after 35 years of teaching.

In his retirement years he enjoyed traveling, fishing and coin collecting. He also enjoyed yard work and playing the poker machines.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Monson of Havre; daughters, Brenda Hoyt of Browning, Debra Knutson of Medford, Ore., and Julie Monson of Havre; and four grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the Lung Association, the Diabetes Association or the Heart Association.
